Based in Albuquerque, New Mexico, S.E.D. Medical Laboratories is a nationally recognized full-service medical and federally certified drugs-of-abuse testing laboratory. S.E.D. performs more than 7.5 million reportable tests annually and employs a staff of 500, handling more than a million patient encounters per year. S.E.D. operates from a modern 50,000 square-foot facility with state-of-the-art equipment and cutting-edge technology with 98 percent of all testing performed in-house. Since its beginning in 1972, S.E.D. has grown to serve thousands of customers in fifteen states.

History

S.E.D. Medical Laboratories was founded in January 1972. The lab took its name from the initials of the pathologists who established the lab, Dr.s Savino, Engberg and Dain. Dr. List came later and contributed the “L” in Laboratories.

Our original office opened with three employees- a phlebotomist/receptionist a medical technologist and a courier.

Over the next 15 years, from 1972 to 1987, S.E.D. significantly expanded its services to include:

  • Cytology
  • Chemistry
  • Microbiology
  • Virology
  • Radioimmunoassay
  • Forensic Toxicology
  • Hematology

During that same time frame, S.E.D. expanded to three Patient Service Centers and 125 employees.

In April of 1987, SED merged with the St. Joseph Healthcare Systems. This joint venture assimilated all SED and hospital lab employees and equipment into one organization.

In September 1998, we moved into our current facility, a beautiful, sparkling, almost all glass building with 50,000 square feet of space! This location houses our core testing laboratory, central processing, microbiology, toxicology, administration, business services, courier services and the warehouse.

In September of 2002 St. Joseph Healthcare System and S.E.D. were purchased by Ardent Health Services. At that point S.E.D. became a wholly owned subsidiary of Ardent.
In January of 2003 Ardent Health Services purchased Lovelace Health System. The merger of the St. Joseph Healthcare System and the Lovelace Health System created a new healthcare network known as Lovelace Sandia Health System consisting of 5 hospitals, 460 healthcare providers and a health plan.
In July of that same year the Lovelace Sandia Health System merged its laboratories with S.E.D. Medical Laboratories. As a result, S.E.D. now provides all laboratory services for the Lovelace Sandia Health System.

Through these mergers, S.E.D. has expanded to include 11 Patient Service Centers in Albuquerque with additional locations throughout New Mexico in Santa Fe, Las Cruces, Rio Rancho, Los Lunas, Roswell and Clovis.
SED is very proud of our 500 plus employees, many of who have over 20 years with the laboratory.

S.E.D. performs over 7,500,000 reportable tests annually and handles over 1,000,000 patient encounters per year. We have grown to serve thousands of clients in 17 states.
